The Essentials In Pitcher Fitness

Not because pitchers use their hands primarily means they necessary should build the bulk of the muscles there. I, for one, have not done so. Not because of fear that I might lose the thing that I do as a pitcher but because the hands are only a part of the whole. What I literally mean is that, staying in shape as a pitcher is like what other player in sports are doing which will involve training the mind and body and not only the specifics. Doing weights could be an additional to the package. Remember that you are going to have to control the speed in your throw and control the overall ball handling. That is your role as a pitcher.
To break down fitness schemes, let us start with the legs. The legs will be your stand point of your endurance and generate power from them. I personally do not have time going to gym just because I want to tone up my legs for a game. I stay fit and shape by climbing stairs or running on the steep hill. I know the results would be the same whether I go to gym or not. So why would you want to spend much just to go to gym when you already know the results would be the same?
The abdomen is the center of your energy supply. Your abdomen builds up the energy needed to be transferred in your arms. Work-out your abs and get better with it any time of day everyday by doing sit-up crunches and use a medicine ball. Again, you don't need expensive equipments to do all this. Use sand to fill the insides of your broken basketball and you already has a medicine ball right in your hands.
Maintaining the condition with or without game is also essential. While it is true that as a pitcher you must not lose flexibility, it is also true that your whole body will give you the exact power to do the thing you do. Without game, you can keep that conditioning by playing other type of sport whether it is soccer or football, take your pick. If you do not have interest in doing so, simple combination of upper segment work up like push ups, middle segment work up like sit-ups and lower segment work up like running will still do the same. When your game is near, you can do cardio drills and comfort jogging because this is as valuable as the rest of exercise for pitchers. Personally as a pitcher, I find staying in shape always is a need that every pitcher should maintain. If you do not stay in shape there is a possibility that you will lose some part of the skills needed to win a game. For instance if your previous fastball is about 100 mph and you did not stay in shape to maintain this in 100 and it goes down to 97 mph then more likely it will make a difference in the win or lose state for your team.
