There are many reasons why people are collecting coins. A few of the reasons is that it is a good hobby, for future investment, the value of artistry, its uniqueness and its monetary value because some rare coins are of very precious metal.

Every coin has its story to tell. There are intricate designs that mean something. Its historical value makes it more precious to the coin collector. This hobby can either be the cheaper or one of the most expensive (among which are collecting cars and yachts). It represents something when it came from other countries.

Every age or gender could choose the kinds of coins that they will be collecting. But for a kid, it would take a lot of convincing from adults to make them interested in collecting. Even if the child wants to get into the hobby, they just don't possess any means, money and the right attention span to pursue it. A teenager can have some interest in the idea but what stops them is the budget and the equipments needed to start the hobby.

For a child it needs low budget or nothing at all. The child need not have a hundred bucks to start coin collecting. They just need a keen eye, a little box to put your collected coins, and a lot of interest. Start by searching for change either inside your own pocket or from your parents with their permission, in penny dishes, coin shops or flea markets. For the teen that has a middling budget. At this stage one can afford something but not too much. By this time, you already have an album to protect the coins with. There are albums which are custom-made for collections but if this is too much for you, having an ordinary album is good. You would want something other than coins. You want more rarer ones, coins that only a few people have. If your budget agrees, buy a book that can identify or price the coins that you have. You can also use the Internet to look for coins being auctioned.

For adults that have budget to spare. This varies according to the kind of coin which is preferred. Coin collections for adults could be for interest and even investment. This is the point which the interest gradually decreases or would normally increase and upgrades can be probable. You could search through other places and find the most unique coin.
