There are three modeling positions. In your modeling process, you have to cycle through each and every one of them. The first is called third person modeling. This is a position you adopt when you are observing only open and observable behavior.

This is one of the positions I adopted when I learnt how to bowl.

I simply copy by looking at how other people do it. A point to take note about third person modeling is that you can copy a lot but it does not ensure competence.

This position is extremely crucial and can provide you with a lot of information that can help you to succeed in your modeling. It requires you to gather direct information from the model himself. This could include interviews or even samples of the model's work. Sometimes, books that the model has written can provide a keen insight into the model's processes. Without clarifying the second position, it will be extremely difficult for you to attain competence in the particular skill area.

As you are doing this, you are also cycling through your internal thought patterns and making sure that they are similar, if not identical to the original model's thought processes. The moment you come out of first person practice, it typically means that you have questions for the model once again. This is where you return to observe the model one more time. You might even be observing yourself from a third person perspective through a video recording.

Whatever the case, once you are done with the first round of practice in the first person, you should go check with the model and find out from if you have attained his level of competence in the particular skill area.

Through this process of modeling by using the 3 modelling positions, you will be able to elict and gain the strategies and skills needed to succeed in your area of interest.
