International Moving Questions You Should Ask

Published by Nir Dotan in Ask an Expert, 3 months 2 weeks 50 minutes 53 seconds ago

There are a number of important questions you should ask when preparing for an international moving adventure. A new country offers new opportunities and also new obstacles to overcome. It is best to hire a relocation specialist or an international moving company to help you.

Most people who move to another country do so because of employment. Companies in the United States and other developed countries will often open satellite offices in countries where labor costs and living expenses are lower. This type of international moving is usually paid for by the company and all arrangements for packing, moving, taxes, and relocation are made by them.

If you have to do your international moving by yourself you should start by addressing some of the issues covered in this article. The first is entry requirements. All countries have entry requirements that include medical exams and vaccinations, passports, and taxes on imported items. The first two you need to deal with yourself and the third can be handled by your international moving company. Make sure that you know in advance exactly how much money you will need for taxes and fees before your departure.

Other issues that you should look at are language, currency units and exchange rates, location of services such as post offices and shopping facilities, and internet / phone access. Learning some basic phrases in the native language can make international moving a more pleasant experience. If you are moving from America you may find that English is spoken in most countries but it can't hurt to be able to ask for something you might need in another language. The unit of currency and rate of exchange are very important pieces of information to have before even beginning the process of international moving. Each country has its own currency and that currency may be worth more or less than the currency you use in your native land. If you are in the U.S. and getting paid in dollars find out what those dollars are worth in the country you're planning on moving to. Then do a little research and find out what your living expenses will be. Price food, gas and travel expenses just like you would normally and then make your moving decision.

Post offices and shopping facilities should be listed on the internet and information on internet and phone access data is available for anywhere in the world. Your current cell phone might work overseas and it might not so check with your carrier to make sure before you leave. Your international moving company might also have information on available technology in the country you're moving to.

The final question that you want to ask before international moving is the location of your current country's embassy in your new country. Don't assume that your citizenship status in one country will give you any rights and privileges in another. It's always a good idea to protect yourself and keep that emergency exit door open just in case you need it.
